Bikies on Kalumburu island
Three members of the Coffin Cheaters motorcycle gang have set up camp on an island about 17 kilometres from Kalumburu. Police say they have an interest in monitoring the situation as part of the State-wide clampdown on outlaw motorcycle gangs Two men and a woman have set up tents on McGowan's Island and have a generator and fishing vessel. |
They have told police they want to set up a small fishing charter business. They have no motorcycles on the island and police say there is nothing to suggest any illegal activities. However, they are monitoring the situation. Local Member Carol Martin says she has real concerns about their presence in the area. |
She said people had enough problems without the drug culture that usually surrounds bikie gangs adding to their problems. It's believed the Coffin Cheaters are trying to sell their clubhouse in Broome. At least one of the bikies on the island is from the Northampton branch of the organisation. |
