Shire move on native title

A move has been made to attempt to solve some of the problems that are holding up development in the Ord Valley.

The Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley has taken the bold step of setting out to establish a land development committee.

It would consist of representatives from the Kimberley Land Council, the Department of Land Administration, the Department of Indigenous Affairs, traditional landowners,

the Kimberley Development Commission and the Shire.

The committee would investigate the development of a memorandum of understanding between the Shire, traditional landowners and other relevant bodies.

It would also investigate options and opportunities to progress land release and development within the Shire.

Its third purpose would be to develop appropriate expressions of interest in relation to LandCorp's Townsite Development Program.

Councillors were provided with a copy of the Native Title Process Agreement between the town of Port Hedland and the Kariyarra people.
