Watch with interest

As per our story this week, Wyndham looks set to show the way with a youth drop in centre.

Kununurra will look on with keen interest to see what successes and failures the centre has.

Although not a new idea, the impact on youth could be a very different experience to similar facilities in the big cities.

Getting young people focused on enjoying themselves without destructive behaviour is a big challenge and always has been.

Our less-disciplined society needs to come up with some alternative that provides diversion and teaches the basic ground rules for functioning within a community.

The old adage that disciplined children become disciplined adults does not hold in all situations.

However, knowing what is acceptable behaviour and what is not is a necessary prerequisite to any society functioning.

As a herd animal human beings are little different to horses or any other communal dwelling living things.

For the unit to work efficiently, ground rules must be put in place and the unit must be prepared to enforce these.

The organiser behind the Wyndham drop in centre Peter Palmer says there will be four rules for the new centre - no drinking, smoking, swearing or spitting.

These might seem pretty basic, but they are a start and a foundation on which other social behaviours can be built.

If he introduces some religion along the way then so be it.

Regardless of attitudes towards religion there is one thing that is certain - it teaches values and ethics that allow people to function in a society that is caring and beneficial to all concerned.

We can only hope Peter's project is a success and, if it is, Kununurra may learn a helpful lesson.
