If it had wheels it qualified for a tryout run on the new skateboard park at the weekend. Although not even officially open, the new skateboard facility in White Gum Park is already turning into a Mecca for Kununurra children. At the weekend it had a consistent flow of youngsters on skateboards, bicycles and even mini scooters trying out its slopes and 'toys'. |
After all the debate, the response must have been a relief for those who pushed for the construction. On Saturday afternoon there were numerous parents and proponents of the park on hand to witness the daredevil antics of their youngsters. Considering the number of children using the facility, there were relatively few accidents. Cr Michele Pucci, one of the group that pushed for the skateboard park, was obviously impressed with its reception. |
The parents agreed that there might need to be more protective headgear, elbow protectors and knee guards worn. However, the excitement of the moment wasn't letting a few grazes get in the way of the enthusiastic fun being had. The dirt and sand areas around the structure will eventually be covered in grass. An official opening is planned, complete with some top-class skateboarders, who will be in Kununurra to teach youngsters a few tricks. |
