DRUG BUST

Local teacher netted in State-wide police operation.

Kununurra detectives have swooped on two local people as part of a State-wide campaign to stop trafficking of methyl amphetamine (speed) and ecstasy.

The operation, code named 'Bag Limit', was one of the most extensive drug busts of the year.

Police claim to have broken up an extensive network of suppliers and dealers.

Phone taps (intercepts) were used as part of the Kununurra operation.

Barramundi School teacher Suzette Jean Peters, 35, of Kununurra, and carpenter, Daniel Nathan Edwards, 25, of Kununurra, were arrested in a midday swoop on their home.

Peters appeared in the Kununurra Court of Petty Sessions on Monday and was remanded to appear again in Kununurra on February 25.

Edwards appeared before the court on Saturday and was remanded to the Broome Court of Petty Sessions on November 12.

They were charged with conspiracy to possess methyl amphetamine with intent to sell or supply.

The charge provides for a maximum fine of $75,000 or 20 years gaol or both.

Neither was required to enter a plea.

No drugs were seized from the house, but some 'items of interest' were collected and are being examined.

Det. Sgt Ashley Goy said he was concerned that drugs were being sent through the post.

He said recent arrests had achieved a significant impact on the distribution of illegal drugs in the Kununurra area.

"I am disappointed that local residents are becoming involved," he said.

"If you decide to deal in drugs, chances are you will get caught."

He said the operation highlighted the intricate measures police were prepared to use to make sure dealers were identified.

He said the recent operations, including a $17,000 marijuana bust, had been a major step forward in the crackdown on illegal drugs in the district.

Det. Sgt Goy urged people to continue to give police information about suspected drug dealers either by calling Kununurra Police on 9166 4530 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Elsewhere in WA 10 men have been arrested and 51 charges laid.

More than $130,000 worth of speed and ecstasy have been seized as well as numerous other illegal substances, stolen goods and $90,000 in cash.

More than $500,000 of other assets are expected to be seized.
