Kimberley tourism tops

Yet again, Kimberley tourism operators have won a disproportionate number of awards in the WA Tourism Awards.

From a field of 123 finalists eight Kimberley companies managed to be amongst the final 38 winners of various awards.

The East Kimberley in particular did exceptionally well, winning four categories and gaining a merit award in one other.

El Questro Wilderness Park won the Major Tourist Attraction Category;
the Slingair/Heliwork Kimberley Moon Experience won the Significant Festivals and Events Category;
Slingair/Heliwork won the Major Tour and Transport Operator Category;
Faraway Bay - The Bush Camp won the unique accommodation Category and
East Kimberley Tours won a merit award in the Significant Tour and Transport Operators Category, just edged out by Pearl Sea Costal Cruises of Broome.

Other Broome winners were: Willie Creek Pearl Farm, Kooljaman at Cape Leveque and Red Sky Charters.

Awards chairman Kevin Harrison said that the courage, investment and innovation of some operators had made the inaccessible accessible, enabling everyone to enjoy the amazing and often hidden parts of WA.

He said honours were evenly shared between the regions and Perth and again the Kimberley featured strongly.

"Its' remoteness is bridged by multi-award winner Slingair Heliwork WA and Faraway Bay - the Bush Camp, whose clients are flown in by the airline to a private airstrip," he said.

Mr Harrison said the success of newcomers to the awards and the closeness of the results related to the tourism industry's drive for accreditation.
