Recent bitterness between some East Kimberley bushfire brigades may become a thing of the past following action from the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley. The new Emergency Services Levy, introduced by the State Government and collected on its behalf by local government led to assigning of funds and bad feeling between the Ivanhoe Bushfire Brigade and the Packsaddle Bushfire Brigade. |
The Shire has brokered a concept of obtaining land for both brigades to build sheds to store equipment. James O'Kenny of the Pincombe Range Bush Fire Brigade is not impressed - see this week's Letters to the Editor column. At its last meeting council decided to approach the Department of Planning and Infrastructure to have two parcels of land vested in the Shire and then leased to each brigade for a 'peppercorn' (minimal) rent. |
The Ivanhoe site is in Cotton Gin Road near the intersection of Weaber Plain Road and Mills Road. The Packsaddle site is near the intersection of Packsaddle Road and Jabiru Road. |
