Prologue: There is a dim light in the vast darkness. I appear to be drawn to the light, and getting closer, it looks like a building with people inside. In the twinkling of an eye, I am part of the 30 or so people in the building, and feel something, something strange, placed over my head. In an instant, I am in front of the building, and standing near what looks like a chariot. Is this a horse's yoke around my neck? Nay, I say, Nay it cannot be! I twist, turn and look back and realize that I am drawing the chariot. There, standing in the chariot surrounded by plunder and booty is an apparition, pointing at me, and the crowd is closing in on me pointing and laughing. I sit up suddenly, perspiration all over my body, and my panting breath takes on a more normal cadence. It was a dream, just a bad dream, as I fall back down in my bed and sink into oblivion of sleep. Presentation night What a great night for the Lake Kununurra Golf Club's presentation dinner. The majority of the year's winners are there to receive the accolades of their peers. But many know that it is as much a night of commiseration for those who have not done as well as they had expected. The awards begin, Match Play first and Vin Durkin is the winner for the men whilst Angie Kemble takes the women's trophy. Eclectic next, with Jim Bailey a popular winner in the men's, whilst Angie Kemble takes the women's trophy. Most Improved goes to Lew Agnew and Sheri Moodie, (who has had an excellent first season of golf). |
Most Consistent, and the winners are Jim Bailey, up for his second prize, whilst Angie Kemble takes the women's trophy. Best Nett 54 holes, Lawrie Harvey takes the honours, whilst Angie Kemble takes the women's trophy. Long Drives of the year, and Mick Thomas wins this one, whilst Angie Kemble takes the women's trophy. (Great Caesar's ghost, what is going on here? I must be almost invisible by now, shrinking down in my seat, with my inner self calling out: "Hey, what about me, there is another Kemble here you know." Foursomes Champions are Don Archer and Tim Triglone, with Valda Woodward and Helen Triglone taking the women's title. (Whew, thank the Lord for that.) The Grade winners, D Grade Kev Lipscombe; C Grade Larry Dyson and Mark Harring second, and Sheri Moodie and Jan Cross second for the women. B Grade, Vin Durkin from Lindsay Innes and Rod Oliver tied for second, and (oh, oh,) Angie Kemble from Christine Puckridge. A Grade goes to Don Archer from Tim Triglone and Richard Clegg tied for second, whilst Helen Triglone takes the women's from Marie Wickstein. Women's Stableford Champion is Sheri Moodie, whilst in the Cherrywood Cup, Division one winner is Helen Triglone, and the Division two winner is Angie Kemble. The Women's Silver Spoon event goes to Helen Triglone for the best gross, and the best nett goes to Angie Kemble. Newman and Brooks Club winners are Helen Triglone, Sheri Moodie and Chris Puckridge, whilst the International Bowl Silver goes to Helen Triglone and the Bronze to Leigh-Anne Adams; this pair also combining to take out the club's Konica Cup event. (Surely I must have done something to get an award throughout the year? |
Desperation is getting the better of me; I have fronted the bar three times now to ease the agony.) Best Club Person award goes to the ever-popular Larry 'Havachat' Dyson. Barry Hobbs! Barry Hobbs is not present. Mark Milne, well Mark is overseas, so he can't get it. Must go to George Kemble. (George Kemble?) At last I hear my name, I am 10 feet tall, I don't know what it is, but it's a trophy, just one to be sure, but I can hold my head high, ah, sweet salvation! In the twinkling of an eye, I am at the podium to receive my just reward. I knew I must done enough to deserve the prize at some stage during the year, and I feel something, something strange, placed over my head, and the lights start flickering and spinning. Epilogue Is this a horse's yoke around my neck? I twist, turn and look back and realize I am pulling a trailer. (Okay, wake up now, this is normally where you have always woken to find it's only a dream.) And in the trailer is Angie Kemble with all her trophies, and around my neck is Muzza and Mick's Dunny Seat with the 2003 NAGA title, and everyone is pointing and laughing. (Oh vile fate, vile fate.) But that's golf. The 9-hole Summer Cup Competition will start on November 16 with a 7am draw. |
