Snr Sgt Mick Sutherland - report incidents and suspicious people. People should report it to police if they have been attacked and/or robbed. This might seem to be an unnecessary warning, but apparently not. Last week the Kimberley Echo received reports of at least three people being attacked and at least two having wallets and personal effects stolen. These incidents happened on November 14, but only one incident (which may well have a separate incident to the ones we heard about) was reported to police. |
The officer in charge of Kununurra Police Snr Sgt Mick Sutherland has appealed to the public to be more aware of the dangers of walking alone at night. He said he had recently observed women walking alone at night and others in pairs exercising along the cycle path after dark. Snr Sgt Sutherland said if people must exercise after dark then they should make sure they were equipped with mobile telephones. He said the better option was to exercise during daylight hours. "It is unfortunate that we do have these people in society who will prey on others when they are vulnerable," he said. |
Snr Sgt Sutherland said that if people were attacked it was imperative that they reported it to police as otherwise how could police do anything about it. "It's not just important to report attacks but also any groups of people loitering or exhibiting behaviours that might be considered suspicious," he said. Kununurra has been remarkably free of 'mugging' type attacks for many years. Darwin, Katherine, Broome and Alice Springs have not been so lucky. People with reports of suspicious looking characters can call Kununurra Police on 9166 4530 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
