Picture Gardens future

The Kununurra Picture Gardens wants the people of Kununurra to help decide the future of the historic entertainment venue.

Part of the land is leased to the Kununurra Progress Association, which runs the Picture Gardens.

However, the Department of Infrastructure and Planning does not intend to renew the lease.

If it can do a land swap with the Progress Association and sell off part of the land it is prepared to enter into an agreement to sell the land currently occupied by part of the Picture Gardens to the Progress Association.

However, this would be over a period of five years, with the association having to raise between $20,000 and $30,000 a year to meet the payments.

In recent years the association has grossed between $2000 and $8000 a year.

Despite the fact that the Picture Gardens are part of Kununurra's history and that they are often packed with people to watch movies, neither the department nor the Minister is prepared to gift the land to the people of Kununurra.

The Progress Association has some other options, but they require massive input and moving existing infrastructure.

Association spokesman Maka Mackay said on Thursday that he was very eager to get the people of Kununurra to come along to the association's annual general meeting on December 8 to have their say.

This would also let members gauge how much community support was available if it took on the gigantic task of purchasing the land.

The meeting will be held at the Picture Gardens at 7pm.
