Quake shakes Kimberley

Residents of Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek felt the effects of a small earthquake at the weekend.

The earthquake measured 4.5 on the Richter scale and struck at 6:30am on Saturday.

It was centred about 100 kilometres northeast of Fitzroy Crossing.

Geoscience Australia seismologist David Jepsen said the epicentre of the tremor was in a remote location.

Because of the remoteness of the epicentre, he did not expect there to be any reports of damage.

He said quakes were not unusual in the region, which boasts the Halls Creek fault line, one of the largest in the world and one that was still active.

"Roughly one, about this size, happens every 10 years up in that area, but it's not uncommon and we would expect to have these in the future," he said.

He suggested people living as far away as 100 kilometres would have experienced some shaking from the event.
