If you take a close look at some of the East Kimberley's boab trees, you might notice some strange things are happening. Certainly not all, but a large number are showing unusual growth patterns. Up to half of the leaves on some trees seem to be lacking chlorophyll and, although the leaves are not dead, they are more of a beige or yellow colour. |
The remainder of leaves on the same tree may appear to be perfectly normal and green. Some people blame spraying of chemicals, but this is unlikely as many of the affected trees are not in areas that would receive spraying. The other abnormal thing is large numbers of small sprouts of leaves coming from the thicker parts of the trunks of some trees. |
This is not as widespread but is nevertheless present. Some people believe the extremely hot days are responsible for not just this, but also the widespread damage to numerous varieties of palms. If anyone knows the answer, drop us a line. |
