Lily Creek mooring

The Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley is seeking comment from the community on the potential of declaring Lily Creek a 'mooring control zone'.

If supported by the community and other government departments, the zone would give the Shire the power to control the location and number of moorings that are placed in Lily Creek Lagoon.

Speed limit restriction could also be imposed.

A draft mooring control zone area has been identified along with a mooring control policy.

The draft mooring policy identifies mooring prohibited areas and illustrates areas where mooring would be allowed.

Shire chief executive officer Chris Adams said that growth in tourism in the region would lead to additional pressure for extra moorings in Lily Creek.

He said that preliminary feedback, the Shire had received on this issue, indicated that there were very differing opinions on how many moorings should be allowed, where they should be allowed and if they should be allowed at all.

Mr Adams said that community comment was being sought so that Council had a clearer understanding of the community's opinions on the matter prior to making a decision.

People interested in finding out more about the proposed mooring control zone area and policy have been encouraged to get a copy of the draft plans by contacting the Shire on 9168 4100.
