The old adage that the law is an ass has a habit of proving itself over and over again. Just last week Ern Hulbert was sent to gaol for possessing a massive collection of child pornography (see story Child pornography conviction in this edition.) It was argued that although he had not actually been involved in any of the incidents depicted, by downloading them off the internet, he had encouraged the perpetrators to commit their disgusting crimes. |
He was convicted and gaoled and rightly so. However, the same legal system that fast-tracked his installation behind bars has failed to address questions over child abuse right here in Kununurra. The prosecution was recently dropped against a man who has allegedly serially molested very young children of both sexes. His history of seeking jobs in institutions that cater for very young children goes back to Sydney. |
Numerous allegations were made in Kununurra and the case opened and closed a couple of times. Detectives move on, the prosecution loses interest and the man moves on, probably to begin his harmful practices all over again. There’s no closure for his alleged victims or their parents; only the sickening certainty that the law has failed them. |
