It is this time of year again when the Kununurra Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service is faced with the challenge of recruiting more members. At the end of each year there is always the potential to lose members as people leave town. The brigade consists of volunteers who attend scrub fires, structural fires, hazardous material incidents and vehicle rescues. As well as attending serious and dangerous incidents, volunteers give a lot of their time for community events, where they demonstrate their training and provide fire awareness. They also work in with schools to educate students about fire issues. |
Kununurra’s current membership is 17 but with people leaving town, the brigade will lose six members by Christmas. Spokesperson Cheryl Wansbrough said there was an opportunity for people interested in helping the community to join the Kununurra Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service. All training and equipment is provided. “We meet on the first Thursday of every month and train on the remaining Thursdays,” she said. “Each Saturday we conduct our weekly checks on all our equipment. |
“Any one interested in joining our service is welcome to come down on either Thursday evening from 7pm or Saturday morning from 9:30am to find out what it is all about. “Joining the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service is a great opportunity to meet different people and learn various skills,” Cheryl said. For further information call fire captain Mike Cuthbertson or Cheryl Wansbrough on 9169 1340 or 040 017 2415. |
