Ski accident

A 22-year-old Kununurra man was due back in town on Tuesday following a painful accident at Ski Beach last Sunday.

The man had been knee boarding, when he came off his board awkwardly near the landing area.

He did not impact the shore, but hurt his back so severely that he could not move in the water.

Police, ambulance and a doctor rushed to the scene and he was taken to Kununurra District Hospital and later airlifted by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Perth.

It was found he had only soft tissue damage and he was discharged.

Stabbed through leg

A 56-year-old man spent three days in Kununurra District Hospital after being stabbed through the thigh with a 15-centimetre kitchen knife.

Police discovered the man walking to hospital near St Josephs School on Saturday at 5.45pm.

He was bleeding from both the entry and exit wounds of the knife.

The stabbing had happened at the Jaru Camp at the Reserve.

Police gave the man a lift to the hospital.

They later charged a 32-year-old man with unlawful wounding.

He will front court on January 19.

Lucky escape

A 25-year-old man had a lucky escape from injury after his mother attacked him with a knife, whilst he was being interviewed by police.

Sgt Gordon Armstrong said police had been talking to the man about an unrelated matter when the man’s mother became agitated and went for him with a stick.

She later grabbed a 20-centimetre kitchen knife and, with it poised above her head, went to stab him, telling him she would kill him.

Police managed to restrain her and take away the knife.

A 42-year-old woman has been charged with threatening to kill and possessing a weapon with intent to injure.

The incident took place last Thursday at about 11.40pm at Nulliwah Reserve.

Warning about bikes

Sgt Armstrong has warned parents and children about the large number of push bikes that are being stolen.

He said bike owners should make sure their bikes were secured and out of sight.

They should also take note of the make, model and serial numbers of their bikes.

Police provide a service, whereby they engrave and photograph bikes to make it easier to recover them if they are stolen.

Sgt Armstrong urged people to call police on 9166 4530 to arrange to have the free recording and engraving performed.

He said parents buying bikes for Christmas presents could have the bikes engraved before they hit the streets.

Jurors not needed

The Kununurra Court House has issued a statement to jurors who had been called on for jury duty on December 14.

They will no longer have to attend on this day, as the matter they were to adjudicate has been cancelled.

New victim legislation

Sgt Armstrong has warned people, who are involved in domestic disputes, that police now have new powers to put in place restraining orders.

Under new legislation, police can issue immediate restraining orders from 24 to 72 hours.

No complaint is necessary from the aggrieved party and even if the aggrieved party says the perpetrator can come back onto the property within the period of the order, both parties can be charged with an offence.

Lock up against burglars

Kununurra police have reiterated their warning to people to lock up their houses – particularly at night.

Sgt Armstrong said far too many people were still being lax with their security, making it easy for burglars to get into their houses and steal valuables.
