Children help shape park

Year 9 art students at Kununurra District High School have had their hands full in recent weeks.

They have been designing and making, with the help of some Year 8s and 10s, 250 ceramic tiles to decorate a new public park being built at Lakeside Park Estate.

The park is being developed by State Government land developer LandCorp as part of its new residential subdivision at Lakeside Park Estate.

LandCorp general manager of operations Mike Moloney said the tiles, which depict animal and landscape motifs, would be set into the sandstone-coloured pavement which forms the centre of the playground area of Nicolson Park.

“Many of the students involved in the designing of the tiles also live in the Lakeside area, so they will have plenty of opportunity to admire their handiwork,” Mr Moloney said.

“We have found community art initiatives such as this have been really valuable in other projects we have undertaken throughout the State in fostering community ownership of public amenities.

“It becomes part of the place where they live rather than just something provided by the developer.”

LandCorp is undertaking a $300,000 upgrade of the two-hectare Nicolson Park.

The Lakeside Park Estate development will result in the provision 109 residential lots, which LandCorp says will meet the short to medium term needs of the town.

The first two stages, comprising 79 lots, are under construction, with the 43-lot Stage One due for release this month.

The park features a paved and shaded area with seating surrounded by three playgrounds, each catering to different age groups ranging from tots to teenagers.
