The first cane toad reared its ugly head in Kununurra a couple of weeks ago and is now in a freezer in Perth. An observant worker at Town Caravan Park Adam Jenkins spotted the toad and alerted park owner Neil Butcher. |
As most of the Conservation and Land Management (CALM) staff capable of identifying it were in Broome at the time, former CALM boss Chris Done was called in to make a positive identification. After identifying it, Chris suggested that lights be set up at night to attract insects and thus any cane toads that might also be in residence. |
No further toads were found and it is believed the toad may have hitched a lift on a car or caravan from the NT. Whilst it is obviously not part of the land invasion, the toad's presence was enough to send a shock wave through local environmentalists. |
