Kununurra police have warned people, businesses in particular, to be more vigilant concerning their cash.
The warning follows a spate of burglaries on Kununurra premises since last Friday, when the sliding doors into the Coles complex were jemmied open to gain access to the mall area inside.
Once in there, the burglars smashed their way into Red Sun Sports and used a weight they obtained there to then smash their way into Red Sun Surf Shop, stealing a total of $1370 in cash from the two premises.
On Saturday, burglars tried to jemmy open the door of the Big Boab Backpackers.
Failing in that attempt, they smashed a window and carried off an apparently unsecured safe containing about $8000 in cash.
Also on Saturday, Lakeside Resort had a glass panel in a door smashed and thieves grabbed an envelope containing $400 in cash before running off when an alarm went off.
On Monday, the Coles Shopping Centre was attacked again.
This time, the burglars made off with a till from the service area of Coles, although why they did this is unclear, as the till contained no money.
Snr Const. Ron Dodson said police believed there may be a link between some of the burglaries and are following up leads.
He said business owners had to be more careful with cash and not keep it on their premises.
"A safe that is not bolted down is not a safe," he said.
Snr Const. Dodson said he was only too happy to perform security audits on premises and advise people how to improve their security.
To organise an audit call him on 9166 4530.
Anyone with information about any of the above offences should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Kununurra police on 9166 4530. |
