Boat facility positive

The future of a commercial boating facility in Kununurra looks brighter following a public meeting last week.
The meeting was held on Thursday at the Kununurra Community Library to discuss the location and concept plan for a commercial boating facility.
More than 50 people attended the two-hour meeting.
The basis of the plan is to locate a publicly-owned facility 130 meters upstream of the Sail Club inlet, between Swim and Ski beaches.
Council officers have been working with key stakeholders during the last few months to try to resolve the long-standing issue.
The result is a location and concept plan that has the support of the majority of commercial operators, relevant government agencies, clubs in the area and the Foreshore Planning Committee.
Shire President Michele Pucci said: "This is the first time, in my memory, a location has been supported by all key stakeholders."
It is proposed the plan will provide individual tenure of land by way of 21-year leases to the four major commercial operators, while providing for future expansion.
The clear strengths of the plan are: it is located downstream from the M1 intake and P1 areas; it will have no significant environmental impacts; and it is a relatively low-cost proposal.
"We now need to get some feedback on the location and plan, before a feasibility study is worth doing," Cr Pucci said.
"The plan needs to be fleshed out, including development costs, lease conditions and management controls with other agencies.
"Identifying the preferred location for a commercial boat facility is the first step, before other issues can be addressed."
During the next two weeks the Shire will seek public comment on the plan.
This will include public displays of the plan at shops and a formal feedback form that can be obtained from the Shire offices or at www.thelastfrontier.com.au
