An attack with a beer glass has left a Kununurra man with about 50 stitches and his alleged attacker was on bail at the time. Only a week beforehand, concreter Seaton Herlihy, 35, of Kununurra was convicted in relation to an incident at the 24-hour BP where he doused a man in petrol and threatened to set him alight. Magistrate Antoine Bloemen fined Herlihy $300 plus costs for that attack. It was not Herlihy's first conviction for assault and his reputation for violence is well known in Kununurra. The latest incident is alleged to have taken place at the front bar of Gulliver's Tavern at 7pm on the night of the Melbourne Cup. Herlihy had earlier been drinking at the Hotel Kununurra. It will be alleged that he had been drinking at Gulliver's Tavern for about an hour when he attacked Vincent Durkin, 46, of Kununurra, armed with a beer glass. It appears the glass broke during the attack, leaving a deep gash in Durkin's cheek and neck and another in his forearm. It required about 50 stitches to close the wounds and observers say Durkin was incredibly lucky a major artery was not severed. Vince Durkin signed himself out of hospital to attend a golfing fixture in Darwin. At the time of the attack, Herlihy was on bail on a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice. It is believed this was in relation to him threatening witnesses to the petrol dousing affair. Herlihy has appeared in the Kununurra Court facing charges of causing grievous bodily harm and been remanded in custody to appear again on November 22. Kununurra detectives have appealed to anyone who witnessed the latest attack to contact them on 9166 4530.
