Federal Member Barry Haase has reacted angrily to the news that the Halls Creek Centrelink scheme has been axed. He has written to Employment and Workplace Relations Minister Kevin Andrews, demanding an explanation and asking whether he is aware of the situation on the ground. "I am extremely disappointed; I cannot see any reason to cancel the project, which has such widespread support," he said. "Addressing the issue of truancy among children is fundamental to the future prosperity of indigenous people." "The scheme was working incredibly well, with attendance jumping from 54 percent to 80 percent in two months. "I can see no justification for cancelling it. "It is ludicrous that Minister Andrews would cancel a program he admits is working and does not oppose. "If there is a question of its legality, that should be addressed and the relevant legislation amended. "I think this move is extremely short-sighted. "I call on the Minister to reinstate the scheme as soon as possible. "I see this scheme as the solution to indigenous unemployment and a circuit breaker for that cycle of poverty. "I see it as something which may be the salvation of indigenous people," Mr Haase said.
