Thomas makes diesel

Thomas Breig and Scotty Munro clown around as John Piercey looks on.

Kununurra chef and former Rumours owner Thomas Breig has started producing his own diesel.

Just to make it more interesting - the man donating the used cooking oil for the project is local BP and BP Roadhouse owner Scott Munro.

Scott says he is not worried by people producing their own bio fuels as if they produce it in sufficient quantity and quality he would be only too happy to sell it.

Thomas is collecting the used cooking oil from the roadhouse and then processing it to produce diesel for his car.

He said: "Burning fossil fuel is a big part in our lifestyle.

"I have been doing it as long as I can remember.

"I think it would be fair to say, we are very dependant on this resource, especially, the western world.

"And now, China, India and other Asian countries are also putting pressure on world supply.

"Unfortunately, the world is not a bottomless pit of resources.

"I am not saying we should kiss our lifestyle good bye.

"Myself, and a small group of individuals are looking into alternatives.

"Biodiesel and ethanol are just two of many alternative options.

"Now with Ord Stage II happening, Kununurra is placed well to produce this fuel in a commercial quantity.

"We already have an excellent clean hydropower system.

"We could be largely independent from fossil fuel supply as well; this would make Kununurra a role model for many other remote communities.

"And for all you 'knockers' out there, my car will be running on used vegetable oil.

"I just have to find something to power the boat and gyrocopter.

"The only money Scotty would then get out of me, would be for iced coffee and bacon and egg burgers.

"Luckily, for him, he doesn't have to worry about losing much business in the near future."
