Canal study continues

The Expert Panel investigating the transport of water from the Kimberley to Perth has conducted a study to gain an understanding of the social and cultural issues.

It has considered issues associated with the pipeline, canal and ocean transport options.

Panel chairman Reg Appleyard said consultants Beckwith and Associates had conducted interviews with approximately 20 key stakeholder groups in Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Kununurra during the past two weeks.

"Understanding and taking account of the views of Kimberley residents, industries, cultural and environmental groups is a critical part of the panel's work," said Professor Appleyard.

"The consultants conducted broad-ranging interviews with stakeholders representing all of those interests."

The interviews included Aboriginal, environmental, local and State government, and economic and primary industry representatives.

Professor Appleyard said the consultant's final report, which is due in early December, would help the panel assess the social and cultural values that Kimberley people placed on water that was transported for use outside the region.

"Panel members have been given some insight into these issues in our previous discussions with Kimberley stakeholders," Professor Appleyard said.

"We know there are concerns over whether the water is used for development in the Kimberley rather than elsewhere, the amount of knowledge on how much water the Fitzroy River can safely provide and the potential cultural and environmental impacts on the river.

"I would like to reassure everyone that the panel will seriously consider all views when we come to prepare our final report for the Government."

The panel will deliver its final report March 31.
