Worries that the coastal shipping service to Wyndham might cease have been allayed.
The State Government has announced that Sea Corporation (SeaCorp) has won the tender.
SeaCorp general manager Cleve Woolams said the company would continue to have a ship call into Wyndham every 17 days.
The service would continue to operate between Fremantle and Darwin, stopping off in Broome and Wyndham.
He said SeaCorp was committed to Broome and Wyndham, to the exclusion of other freight if necessary.
It would also seek to deliver competitive rates.
The company would charter a ship of the same size as 'The Kimberley' for the first year of operation, before buying a larger ship to put on the route.
Mr Woolams said he hoped the company would continue to bring in equipment and supplies for the Ord River District Co-operative, the Argyle Diamond Mine, Guerinoni and Son, Vagg's Liquor Store and others.
SeaCorp would take over the service from the Patrick's-owned Nor'west Shipping on about December 5.
Mr Woolams is no stranger to the East Kimberley and hopes to hold a function to talk to business people before the end of the year. |
