Art goes to Canberra

The inspirational Jirrawun Arts group from Kununurra has mounted an exhibition in Parliament House in Canberra.
The exhibition began on Monday and will run until December 8.
It contains work by Gija artists Goody Barrett, Paddy Bedford, Peggy Patrick, Rusty Peters, Rammey Ramsey, Phyllis Thomas and Freddie Timms.
The exhibition is in the Presiding Officers' Exhibition Area on the first floor of the Public Gallery.
Arts Minister Rod Kemp and Indigenous Affairs Minister Amanda Vanstone attended the opening on Monday.
Jirrawun Arts made headlines when the group donated $20,000 towards a project for 'at risk' youth in Kununurra in August this year.
They are a completely independent group of Aboriginal artists working from a house in Kununurra.
They received no government money to set up their organisation or to run it.
Their contemporary art does not go to Aboriginal galleries, but rather to mainstream contemporary galleries in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
Jirrawun Arts patron is former Governor General Sir William Deane and a board of directors runs the company.
Artistic director and chief executive officer Tony Oliver said the artists painted for the higher end of the market.
