A group of four Kununurra horse owners traveled the 500kms over the border to the Katherine Show last week, with seven horses in tow. Craig Dobson's pure Arabian, 'Aztec' was again successful, winning his halter class and beating some top part-breds to be Champion Arabian or Arabian Derivative. Sasha Day made the long journey with two times Kununurra Supreme exhibit, 'Totally Focused', (aka Kodak) to challenge the NT thoroughbreds. Unfortunately Kodak was narrowly beaten, gaining second place to the eventual supreme exhibit of Katherine. Glad for the experience against some immaculately presented horses and handlers, Sasha declared she would set Kodak for the Katherine show next year and hopefully bring home the Championship. Kate Sjollema was the next to enter the ring, with her miniature horse 'Atlanta Brianna'. With another 12 months growing since the last show, Brianna showed extremely well and beat some much larger horses to place 3rd in the Any Other Recognised Breed mare class, and topped it off with a sensational win in the Open Led Mare/Filly up to 13hh. Kate was pleased with the results, but was looking forward to Darwin Royal, where Brianna will compete against her own breed. The Shaw family from Spring Creek Station had a fabulous show as well. 'Moolabulla Jazz' was placed 3rd in the ASH Gelding over 15hh, was 2nd in the Maiden Ridden Hack and 3rd in the Open Ridden Hack 15.2 to 16hh. 'Bundawarra Scarlet' placed 3rd in the Arabian/Arabian Derivative Mare, and 2nd in the Open Led Mare up to and including 13hh. 'Aryline Silver Lynn' placed 2nd in the Open Led Mare over 13hh and up to 14hh. The Shaw kids took the rider classes by storm both winning their respective rider classes, then teamed up with some new friends for the pair of rider classes. William placed 2nd in this event, with Sally placing third. Sally also rode in the show jumping for the first time. Both then took their ponies over to the rodeo arena and gave very credible performances in the junior camp-draft competition. Jane Shaw believed that the opportunity to have Kununurra and Katherine shows before the Royal would be beneficial to their performance in Darwin. |
