Bad memories relived

Keith Wright relives his memories of the 'Kimberley Killer'.

Intense memories about a killer on the loose almost 20 years ago were relived in Kununurra last Friday night.
In 1987, the East Kimberley was in shock as news quickly spread of two murders at Timber Creek, followed closely by three more killings at the Pentecost River. The search for the German gunman brought many different reactions from locals at the time.
The fear, anger and excitement experienced was retold to a visiting documentary crew, who were filming for the Foxtel crime channel show Crime Investigation Australia, hosted by Steve Liebmann.
Apart from talking with local Kununurra people, they also caught up with helicopter pilot and hero of the day Peter Leutenegger at Napier Downs who raised the alarm after spotting the German gunman.
They also interviewed police who were involved.
The show is due to air early next year.
The Kimberley Echo will be doing a 20-year anniversary special on the anniversary in July 2007.
