Why special treatment?

The financial viability of keeping Wyndham Airport open has got to be questioned.

Whilst it is good to have an airport for emergencies, landing on dirt strips is common practice for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Overall, the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley makes money out of its two airports, but the Wyndham operation on its own loses money.

Many are critical of the airport's function of being an integral part of the 'grog runs' to Kalumburu and Oombulgurri - not to say that its closure wouldn't just move the problem elsewhere.

To add insult to injury, the commercial operator/operators owe the Shire money - lots of it.

Ord Air Charter is on the books owing $54,429 and Wyndham Aviation (basically the same company) owes $45,278.

This begs the question: why keep the airport open for the benefit of a company that doesn't pay its debts?
