Waringarri Arts is going to finish the year with a 'bang'.
To celebrate a successful year, the centre has invited Kununurra people, next Wednesday at 6pm, to enjoy a traditional Miriwoong corroboree and have the final opportunity to purchase artworks at Waringarri's Christmas sale prices, before end of year closing on December 15.
Throughout the year, working quietly away on the edge of town Waringarri Aboriginal Arts has been gaining acclaim and recognition interstate and overseas with a new generation of East Kimberley artists.
Waringarri Arts manager Cathie Cummins said: "Kununurra can be proud of these artists, who are proving they have the capacity to continue the tradition of other well known East Kimberley artists such as Rover Thomas and Queenie McKenzie, whose artworks are now internationally recognized and much sought after with six-figure price tags."
"The commitment of this new generation of Waringarri artists is producing beautiful and vibrant artworks inspired by local stories of culture.
"Now being recognized by many art collectors and public galleries, Waringarri artists are making their presence known and are now represented in the National Gallery in Canberra, the State galleries of Vic, Qld and WA and a number of other important private and public collections within Australia and overseas," Cathy said.
Artists were involved in several important exhibitions throughout the year, with Minnie Lumai and Mignonette Jamin represented in a prestigious exhibition at the Qld Art Gallery in April after being selected as two of only ten finalists for the Xstrata Coal Emerging Indigenous Art Award.
Senior artist Alan Griffiths was awarded a fellowship from the WA Department for Culture and the Arts early in the year.
This allowed Alan to focus on his solo exhibition at Charles Darwin University in August.
Daisy Bitting was awarded first prize in the Shinju Matsuri Art Award in Broome and has enjoyed successful inclusion in several interstate exhibitions throughout the year.
People should bring their own chairs to the corroboree.
The gallery will be open until 8pm.
