Kununurra District High School music teacher Ed MacNeill is a round two winner in the Premier's Teacher of the Year Award
The award recognises his outstanding efforts in improving the educational outcomes of students.
Local Member Carol Martin said Ed ensures that music is the constant thread of school and community life.
His curtain raiser for the Ord Valley Muster involved school choristers and a school community choir delivering rock, blues, cathedral music and swing. Respected by local Aboriginal families, Ed was nominated by a colleague.
A total of 60 public school teachers and 11 TAFEWA lecturers around the State have been recognised for their significant contributions to the education of young people.
Each winner will receive $1000 as part of the awards program and join the 52 winners from round one to be chosen as the 2006 Premier's Teacher of the Year, which carries prize money of $25,000.
Mrs Martin said teachers and lecturers had been nominated for achievements as diverse as establishing an intensive English centre for newly arrived migrants to educating students through song, music and rhyme.
"Teachers and lecturers educate, inspire and motivate students to achieve their very best," she said.
It is the second week in a row that Ed has made the news; last week it was when his son Carl was drafted to the AFL club Richmond.
