Cleanup winners announced

Kununurra's Kate Sjollema - winner of the Local Hero Award.

Clean Up the Kimberley Weekend Achievement Awards winners have been announced.
Following a record turnout for the 2006 Clean Up the Kimberley Weekend, 'Local Hero' awards have been finalised and selected from the 1678 volunteers who got involved across the region.
This year, there were five categories of awards for Local Heroes with prizes donated by Kimberley businesses.
"It has been tradition since the early days of the Kimberley Clean Up to award prizes donated by Kimberley businesses to those people who give a little more but it also says a lot about the dedication of every single volunteer that identifying a Local Hero is so difficult," Clean Up the Kimberley organiser Jake Zahl said.
Clean Up Australia chairman Ian Kiernan said he was amazed by the record turnout for the 2006 Clean Up the Kimberley Weekend.
"The Kimberley community has set a challenge for the rest of the country to match, if they can.
"So many people over such a huge area got involved and did so to look after the Kimberley environment; that's inspiring."
Local Hero Award (regional) went to Kate Sjollema from Kununurra.
Kate was a member of the Ultimate Adventures team lead by Jane Harman.
The team cleaned up Parry's Creek Road and Valentine Springs Road finishing up at Hairy Dog's Camp on the lower Ord River for a well-deserved barbecue.
The team diligently filled in their rubbish report form and collected a staggering 148 beer bottles and 168 beer cans.
They covered a total distance of 56 kilometres and filled 36 bags.
Kate's prize was a beautiful framed 'Stairway to the Moon' piece made from carved pearl shell donated by Chris Maher from Art house Broome.
"I feel privledged to receive such an award and offer my thanks to my Kimberley Clean Up leader Jane Harman for nominating me as well as the judges who gave me the award," Kate said.
Local Hero Award 2 went to Dallas Dempster from Broome.
The Carol Martin Weird Waste Award went to Wendy Gunn from Broome, who picked up a toilet seat.
The photographic competition scenery award went to Margaret Williams and the children at Bililluna Community, south of Halls Creek.
The award for people photographs went Dennis and Melody Taylor and the children at Dodnun community near Mt Elizabeth on the Gibb River Road.
