TeenFit a real hit

Almost 30 young people aged between 13 and 17 have just completed an eight-week fitness program 'TeenFit' at the Kununurra Leisure Centre.

A children and adolescent exercise specialist with more than 16 years experience in the fitness industry Elaine Ferteis delivered the program.

The Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley developed the program to encourage youth to participate in physical activity year-round, including the hotter months. Traditionally, youth are heavily involved in sport during the dry season, but have had little organized activity to take part in during Terms One and Four.

The program was designed to introduce young people to a variety of activities aimed at increasing their fitness, coordination and strength in a controlled and safe environment.

TeenFit consisted of boxing, weights circuits, fitball/pilates, power bar and aquatic fitness activities.

By introducing participants to a variety of activities it is envisaged that they will continue participating in fitness and recreational programs on an ongoing basis.

The success of TeenFit and the popularity of the boxing for fitness component have prompted the development of Teenbox.

Elaine will conduct both programs at the Leisure Centre in Term 1, 2007.
