A fight over alcohol appears to have led to the death of a 39-year-old man outside Tuckerbox Supermarket in Kununurra last week.
Police will allege that at about 9.15am, Charles Joseph Mengil, 26, of Kununurra was walking across White Gum Park.
He came across Johnny Carroll and asked him for some of his wine.
Carroll reportedly refused, saying the wine wasn't his to give away.
It will be alleged that Mengil then punched him in the head twice before carrying on his way.
Det. Sgt Tom Doyle said another man took issue with the way Mengil had treated Carroll and a fight ensued, during which, police were told, the second man (whose name cannot be used for cultural reasons) was knocked to the ground on a couple of occasions as he retreated backwards from the enraged Mengil.
After about 15 minutes, he had been forced across the road to near the entrance to the supermarket, where he went down again, with blood coming from his head and stopped breathing.
Police attempts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead on arrival at Kununurra District Hospital.
Mengil was taken into custody to sober up.
He was later charged with causing grievous bodily harm in circumstances of aggravation and remanded in custody to the Broome Magistrate's Court on April 24.
The charge is likely to be upgraded to murder or manslaughter following a post-mortem examination.
It has not been revealed where the men had come by the alcohol.
