Quiet week in Kununurra

Kununurra police report a quiet week, especially in light of it being school holidays.
They attended 33 jobs and made 17 arrests in the seven days up until Tuesday, mostly for relatively minor offences.
The only exception was an apparent manslaughter on Wednesday morning last week outside Tuckerbox Supermarket (see story Page 3).
Snr Const. Ron Dodson said police were pleased with a downward trend in the number of drink/driving offences - only two people were apprehended driving whilst drunk and without a licence.

Obstructing police

It will be alleged a Lakeside woman called police to complain about a person, who was on her premises at 1.30am on Sunday.
When police arrived the woman proceeded to abuse them whilst the man escaped over her back fence.
A woman was later charged with obstructing police.

Praise for citizens

Residents and passers by near the Kununurra District High School have come in for praise from Kununurra police.
Officers have encouraged them to continue to report anyone seen on the school grounds, who doesn't appear to have a legitimate reason for being there.
In the past week, senseless vandals have broken 16 windows in the school.

Speed warning

Snr Const. Dodson has issued a warning to drivers to observe speed limits near Kununurra District High School and St Joseph's School when students return to school next week.
He said there was a 40 kilometres and hour limit outside the schools between 7.30am and 9am and from 2.30pm to 4pm.
Motorists should also be extremely aware of the tendency for children to dart out from between vehicles as they arrived or left the school.
Although police presence might not be readily apparent, they would be keeping a close eye on the area.

Kalumburu now quiet

Kalumburu community has settled down again after some unrest on Saturday night following the arrest of three alleged sex offenders (see Page 1 story).
Snr Sgt Bob Terms said the community had been a bit noisy as members of families associated with alleged perpetrators and victims vented their frustrations at each other.
He said police had spoken to both families and they had agreed to keep the peace.
