Kalumburu chairperson arrested
The chairperson of the Kalumburu Aboriginal Corporation Clement Maraltadj, 51, has been arrested and charged with rape of a minor.
Sgt Warren Greatorex said the charge related to an alleged incident that took place in 1974.
Maraltadj was flown out on Friday to be held in Kununurra until magistrate's court on Tuesday.
However, a visiting solicitor demanded to have a court convened on Sunday evening and a telelink was set up with Justice Simmons in Perth and the man was bailed on the condition that he reside on McGowan Island near Kalumburu.
Kununurra to Derby crime spree
Three Kununurra boys appeared in court Derby on Tuesday following a crime spree that started when they stole a car in Kununurra.
It will be alleged the boys, aged 11, 12 and 14, stole the car late last week and then set about committing burglaries, stealing petrol and then another car as they headed through Halls Creek to Broome and then back to Derby, where the long arm of the law finally caught up with them.
They were expected to face 10 charges each.
String of offences
A 23-year-old South Hedland man is facing numerous charges after allegedly running amok on Saturday evening.
Snr Const. Simon Bickers said police were first alerted to a car being driven erratically around Lakeside at 8.15pm.
He said police would allege the car failed to pull over when a police car followed it with flashing lights around several streets.
The accused man finally jumped from the car as it was headed east along Leichhardt Street and the car continued on, smashing into a parked vehicle.
It will be alleged the man attempted to run off, but was caught.
The man faces charges of burglary, stealing, failing to stop, reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and stealing a motor vehicle.
Stabbed woman
Kununurra police will allege that a 20-year-old woman received a slight wound to her back following an incident near the Crisis Centre in Kununurra.
Snr Const. Bickers said it would appear a 24-year-old man stabbed the woman with a boning knife and then hit her on the head with the butt of the knife.
The woman was holding her eight-month-old baby boy in her arms at the time.
She was taken to hospital for treatment.
The man was charged with unlawful wounding.
Machete man
A man wielding a machete was reported to be amongst a crowd of people threatening others at Lakeside Resort after the rodeo on Saturday.
Police believe a group of people had gone to the resort to extract revenge over a fight that had taken place at the rodeo.
Police dispersed the crowd, but failed to locate the machete man.
Enquiries are continuing.
Quite busy
It was a busy seven days up until last Tuesday for Kununurra police.
Snr Const. Bickers said police responded to 144 jobs making 45 arrests.
The majority of charges were for drink/driving and driving without a licence. |
