Four men miraculously escaped serious injuries when this car slammed into a tree near Kununurra. Four men amazingly walked away from a Holden Commodore car in the early hours of last Thursday morning on the Victoria Highway. Snr Const. Ron Dodson said police would allege the vehicle had come to the attention of police earlier in the night. When a police patrol on the Victoria Highway again spotted the vehicle, they turned around to follow it as it allegedly sped away, heading west. Police decided against a high-speed pursuit because of the wet conditions of the road. However, three minutes later they came across the vehicle, which had run off the road between Cyril Kleinig Drive and the Swim Beach turnoff and run head on into a tree. Airbags in the vehicle had prevented serious injuries. Police will allege they found the 18-year-old driver hiding in bushes. He and his three passengers were taken to Kununurra District Hospital, but were found to have no serious injuries. The driver of the borrowed vehicle has been charged with driving with a blood alcohol in excess of .02 and driving without a licence. More charges are likely.
