Two Kalumburu men facing a string of child sex offences have been granted bail. This was despite Kalumburu people warning against the move. When the two appeared in the Broome Magistrate's Court last week, they were not required to enter pleas to a total of 13 charges. The prosecution produced a letter to the court from the Kalumburu Aboriginal Corporation claiming that allowing bail could cause the victims to be attacked again. However, the magistrate argued this was only the corporation's opinion and was not based on evidence. He granted bail for the pair to live in Broome on strict conditions. The prosecution opposed bail saying that the victims' families had threatened tribal payback. |
