Warmun shows the way
By TRISH YOUNG
AFTER round three of the EKFL competition, Warmun Eagles remain undefeated.
The Demons travelled to Warmun as underdogs in the clash between bottom of the ladder and top of the ladder.
The Demons kicked two of the first three goals of the match and showed they were not going to be easy beats.
After a slow start, Warmun consolidated in the second half of the first quarter and went into the break two goals up. In the second quarter, the Demons continued with their hard at the ball brand of football which led to them being rewarded on multiple occasions for their hard tackling.
Eagles were struggling to get their running game together and by the halftime break the gap was reduced to one goal, with Eagles holding a slender lead.
In the second half the Demons once again let themselves down with far too many simple skill errors. Eagles capitalised on every turnover and switched into top gear, playing their trademark running game and using the ball with great speed and skill.
The Eagles continued to repel every Demons forward move with their running backs linking with their wingman and delivering to some great leads from their forwards.
In the final quarter, the Demons came out and scored the first goal. Unfortunately, this seemed to fire the Eagles up and they kicked five goals to one, winning the game by 48 points.
Best for the Demons: Robbie Huddleston, Garry Dagg and Troy Osman; goal kickers Garry Dagg, Kitch Davey, Tommy Read, Les Smith and Steve Woodhouse.
Best for the Eagles: Steven Ramsay, Luke Banks and William Ramsay.
Luke Banks kicked five goals.
The Eagles encouragement award went to Jamie Carey.
Wyndham Crocs did the long hike to Halls Creek to face the might of the Hawks, who were all fired up after last week’s win on the road against the Demons.
The final score of Hawks 15 goals 22 points to Crocs four goals one point showed how some teams find the long trip hard on the players.
The Hawks backline is working well together and all players are putting in a great effort and playing a real team game.
Best for the Hawks: Nathan Roberts, Tristan Bedford, Barry Long, Dean Mosquito, Anthony Parks and Clayton Bedford; goal kickers: Tristan Bedford (3) Jamie Elliot, Paddy McGinty and Dwayne Butters (2) each with Clayton Bedford, Anthony Parks, Zianal, Cedric Cox Aquinas Cox and Nathan Roberts all one each.
Trish McKay congratulated the Crocs on making the long trip to Halls Creek. Best players for the Crocs were: Manuel Martin, Preston Gallagher, George Johnson, Matthew Cracknell and Thomas Haji Ali; goal scorers: Jamie Kadabil (2) Fred Johnson and Matthew Cracknell (1).
Back in Kununurra, the Magpies played host to the Waringarri Crows.
The Crows started the game off at a cracking pace and left the Magpies hopelessly out of touch.
The speed of the Crows taking the ball out of the centre giving off to their running flanks and wings left the Magpies chasing all day.
At the final siren, the Crows ran out winners by a whopping 103 points (Crows 22.16 to Magpies 6.9).
Best for the Crows: John Cox, Eric Cox, Michael Harris, Sam Curry and Kim Griffiths; Ed Cox kicked 5 goals.
Best for the Magpies: Andrew Cripps, Guy Hapke, Dave Rudeski, Matt Cross and Timo Diederickson; coach’s award Chris Schuts.
In next week’s games: Friday - Crows V Demons at 7.30pm Kununurra Town Oval; Saturday - Magpies V Hawks at Kununurra Showground at 2.30pm; Crocs V Eagles at Wyndham Oval at 2.30pm.
